Obligatory Oscars crap

OK, OK, I’m typing already. I wasn’t gonna do the whole Academy Awards aftermath post, but Nao said I would be denying who I am if I didn’t rant about the Oscars (well I wouldn’t have to if they didn’t get it so consistently wrong!). So here ‘tis.

I was happy with Philip Seymour Hoffman (I believe my exact words were “Hoffman’s due”), and Reese With-a-spoon, but where did Crash come from? I guess we’re giving a Best Picture to any two-bit made-for-tv feature length these days. They wax lyrical about the films that win to have “resonated with the audience”, but I’d have to say, for better or worse Brokeback more than satisfied that criteria. Crash will be forgotten before the rental is out. [Ow!]

Oh, and if you were wondering what I think about the word pimp being forever included in the illustrious list of Academy Award winners (although said list does dubiously include Jennifer Warnes twice), ACW says it better than I ever could.

Crash

I made some harsh comments about this film before actually having seen it, but now that I have, I’m not going to waste a post on it. I was totally justified in my pre-viewing analysis. This film will be forgotten. The only reason it got Best Picture is that it’s about a controversial social issue set against an LA backdrop. Something the AMPAS members who voted for It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp readily identified with, obviously.

We hired this after no less than 3 recommendations from people who’d seen it, and we accidently returned it late, so had to pay an exorbitant $14 for it! $14 too much, I say.

The truth is, it probably IS hard out there for a pimp (one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard - it’s the ‘Batman and Robin’ of the music world), but my main concern with the Oscars this year was all the crap that Jon Stewart copped. I mean, really, I thought he was very good - funny, quick witted AND didn’t crap on for too long. Plus, the smear campaign ads were hilarious. He won’t be asked back and it’s a shame. I don’t know who they’ll drag in for the gig next year. Maybe Eddie McGuire has a hole in his schedule. As for ‘Crash’, unlike the good Doctor, I enjoyed the film, but if that was best picture I’ll eat my own hat, just like I did when ‘Shakespeare in Love’ got up. I mean, really….

Damn, boy! You’d be runnin’ outta hats!
